KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- MIMOS, a premier applied research centre in frontier technologies and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), have launched a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Telecommunication Technology.
Located at UTM's Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the centre is to drive the nation's transition to a Ubiquitous Network Society.
In a joint statement here on Friday, MIMOS and UTM highlighted that the CoE is aimed at strengthening research and development (R&D) activities in the telecommunications field.
At the same time, it is also intended to enhance the competitiveness of Johor's local information and communication technology (ICT) industry, within Iskandar Malaysia.
"The establishment of the CoE is a further demonstration of our efforts in empowering local universities as our virtual researchers," said MIMOS president and chief executive officer, Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah.
Leveraging on UTM's more than 20 years of expertise and experience in the area of telecommunications technology, the CoE will create new ICT job opportunities.
The centre will also enhance the capacity and domain expert competency development of locals within Iskandar Malaysia, in line with MIMOS' human capital development efforts.
The collaboration between MIMOS and UTM via the CoE will result in the transfer of knowledge and expertise while promoting research activities with the ultimate aim of producing cost-effective base technology platforms.
